We spend a great deal of our waking hours at work. If our supervisors or coworkers are treating us badly, they can ruin our mood an our relationships round the clock. They can hurt our productivity. They may make us want to quit or make our employers want to fire us.
Furthermore, our self-esteem as adults is largely fed by our success at work. Workplace problems can profoundly affect the way we feel about ourselves.
If the people who are treating you badly do so to everyone around them, there may be little you can do to change the situation. Perhaps it is enough to accept them for the way they are and refuse to let yourself suffer because of them. Remember the Serenity Prayer:
Lord grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
On the other hand, if people seem to be targeting you specifically, then the chances that you can improve your situation are much better. The Bullies to Buddies approach may be just what you need to quickly improve your life at work.
